I can't help but feeling like Yllish and its region is going to play a huge role in the 3rd book. The fact that it's such a lost language, first of all, gives it a wonderfully mysterious quality in a world with such access to knowledge (the Archives being that world's library of Alexandria with teams of explorers attempting to seek out seemingly every book in existence). If anyone significant understood Yllish, surely the master linguist (RIP) would be aware of them or have their knowledge? And how significant is it that the person at the university that had the most knowledge of Yllish is now dead?
Speaking of the Archives and acquisitions, the ranger type guy that Kvothe saw at the Archives thought Kvothe was Yllish at first. I'm sure that has some kind of significance, though I have no idea what it could be.
The most obvious mystery requiring Yllish is the Lackless box. Before Kvothe no one knew there was Yllish on it at all but now he's going to have to figure out the language if he wants in.
The question I'm more interested in, though, is what magic did Denna use on Kvothe that night at the Eolian? The magic of writing things down and making that future come true for the reader, even if they couldn't understand what was written? She was tracing patterns on the table, which I'm sure was a Yllish knot, but what spell was she putting on Kvothe, if any? I find that question absolutely tantalizing because if she is capable of doing that then she can put Kvothe completely under her power (har har, like he isn't already).
What do you theory veterans have to say?
