Alright, I was rereading NotW for like the 50th time, this time specifically looking for stuff to support the theory that Denna is actually the Moon, when completely by accident I had this thought/semi-realization. Just wanted to post it and see what you guys thought.
It is currently a popular theory that Master Lorren is, in fact, a member of the Amyr. This is a theory that I subscribe to and with that in mind I began to wonder at the original run in Master Lorren had with Kvothe. I am referring to when Kvothe is trying to get accepted in to the University for the first time. Master Lorren approaches Kvothe afterwards and asks Kvothe if his father was Arliden the bard. I naturally assumed that their had been a meeting or something, that Master Lorren had known or been acquainted with Arliden in some way. But thinking about it now that makes less sense because Kvothe specifically says in his inner monologue immediately after the question that his father always thought of himself as a trouper and never referred to himself as a bard or minstrel.
All of that to preface this theory. Master Lorren is in fact a member of the Amyr and the reason why he has heard about Arliden is becauset he Amyr KNEW about his work on the song that eventually led to his death. Knowing this they would also have known that the song would lead to the Chandrian hunting him down and killing him. Why would they let him continue if they knew it would lead to an attack? They were using Arliden as bait for the Chandrian, to lure them out. This would lead to Master Lorren's curiosity about Kvothe because obviously the plan was botched because the Angels didn't show up till after the attack and the Chandrian had already fled. They would have assumed the death of the entire troupe but Kvothe showing up as Arliden's son would have made Master Lorren suspect he had survived the attack. Which would also explain Master Lorren's continued attention of Kvothe and his eventual attempt to discourage Kvothe's attempts to research the Chandrian at the Archives.
This leads into another popular theory: that Kvothe eventually discovers the Amyr and has a falling out with them. Which would be a specific reference to when Kvothe is said to have killed an Angel. I believe that part of this "falling out" will be as a direct result of Kvothe learning that the Amyr knew about the dangers Arliden's song posed and still let him continue on in ignorance as bait. Just had a thought actually. What if Kvothe's old tutor, Ben, was actually a member of the Amyr as well? What if Ben was their way of trying to warn Arliden of some of the dangers of what he was doing without explicitly coming out and saying "hey, the Chandrian are real and if you keep using their names they might stop by and say hello." Anyway, food for thought. Let me know what you guys think!
