I'd love to hear theories or ideas on where our story is taking place. Personally, I think it's intentionally left vague and undefined because what's more important is that Kvothe has gone "off the map" and one small town is a lot like another. I think the name N E Warre reaffirms this as in he could be anywhere on the map and have a similar experience of a small town.
At the beginning of NW he did say "I didn't think [the scrael] were this far west yet" - that could mean he's near the mountains and they could be coming from the unexplored East. That's kind of grasping at straws, though.

There are a few clues that lead many to speculate the location of Newarre is in Vintas. Specifically the coinage used and discussed in the frame story. I think Aaron, the smiths boy, specifically mentions what kind of coin he is expecting to recieve when he signs up for the military, and these are vintish named coins when referenced.
But it is still speculative at best.

I should probably also add, some people also believe it may be in the Small Kingdoms since it's close enough to Vint and it's speculated the culture would be mixed especially because of the bay access it has.

In my re-reading I noticed 1 more thing. In the frame, the villagers are quick to label the scraelings as demons. During the campfire discussion of folklore between his parents and Ben, we learn that each region has its own fears (be they Fae, draugur, shamble-men, etc) and the region that fears demons is Atur. That means it stands to reason that the village is in or near Atur.

Do you per chance remember or have access to look what they fear or believe in in Vintas? I'm away from my book for a few hours.
I'd just be interested to know because I've never seen that noted before and I find it a very good observation.

Vintas they are afraid of the Fae and of Draugur. That ties together with the real world because he finds Ferulian in Vintas and is brought to Fae through that region.
